What you should and shouldn’t do
First of all, try to assess the damage. If part of a tree has fallen down but some is still standing, then it is really important that you don’t get too close. The tree could be very fragile and in danger of breaking further. If the tree has fallen down completely, then you still shouldn’t put yourself at any risk by trying to take too close a look. From a safe distance, try to see if the tree damaged any walls or fencing. What about buildings?

When a tree falls down, the tree’s owner is responsible for it. Who owns a tree is decided by one thing: where it is rooted. If that is on your property, it’s all down to you. However, if the tree was growing in a neighbouring outdoor space, then the property owners are responsible for the costs of having it removed. Any damage caused by a neighbouring tree should be covered by your insurance. If in doubt, double-check right now!
